Alright lads
lets say you've got just an ordinary PAL, the stars have alligned and for some reason you haven't been able to attain an RPAL, but you've still got to defend your home and the people inside!
so what do you use? some type of shotgun or non restricted rifle? or maybe something else?
Post your suggestion for the best home defence firearm (specific model's preferred) that does not require an RPAL legal use right here in Canada

Maybe there is a different answer depending on the type of home / property?

it doesn't matter, just anything you would use and why.
this isn't suggestions for me, it's for discussing your choice of a non restricted firearm for defence, so wherever you live, in whatever type of home you live, from a place in the city to a farm in the boonies throw up your suggestion, it's not for a " whats best for this specific place and purpose" it's for anyone to discuss their own choice so anything goes

Shotgun, Dominion Arms Grizzly. 8.5" barrel, 3" shells, 2 in the tube one in the chamber. If you ever had to use a gun in your house to defend yourself or the people in it then I'd use something that would have an equal ratio of fear to effectiveness. Shotguns are perfect for that, you rack the gun and people know what you have and what they're capable of doing.

I agree in saying that shotguns can provide genuine FEAR.
Further - I apprecieate this conversation, period. I like the topic, and it's taboo for many.
I'm therefore assuming we all understand the laws surrounding self defence that apply to each region.
Shotgun. 870 or similar, short barrelled, buckshot. You're not shooting to maim or otherwise hurt. You're shooting to STOP. You're fearing for your LIFE.
Past that, a BAT... and BETTER household security.
SHTF? - Shotgun for the city dweller. 7.62 for everywhere else.

Well ANY gun is better then no gun first off so work with what you got, what you are good with and espically what you know how to handle best because you will be in a panic. I think that rifles are TOO powerful and you will have over penatration with one(unless you go the .22LR route and that is a little on the weak side)...you are not going to be able to wait to get a shot that the bullet is going to go in a perfectly safe space after it leaves the "bad guys" body or if you miss because when you fire is up to the "bad guy" really. I personally would go with a shotgun of any kind. A smaller one would help you with moving it around your home and that would be helpful. The shotgun has 2 really great things about it. #1 its BIG..its a big gun, big hole at the end of it and best of all if its a pump it makes the universal FUCK OFF sound when you cock it...you more then likely wouldn't even need to fire it because buddy will be RUNNING home. #2 AMMO OPTIONS...you could shoot birdshot out of your shotgun and that give you a nice spread and best of all limited penatration...you won't have the pellets going into the neighbours home or into the street as long as your not firing it through a window or RIGHT up aginst a wall and then you have slugs and buckshot to play with too but again I think there is too much power behind those.

i kinda like the idea of a sub-gun/pistol caliber carbine as the ideal hd weapon ideally an mp5 running frangible or lower power hollowpoints unfourtunately in canada im gonna have to settle for a FAMAE SAF or B/T TP9 i think my next purchase is gonna be a 9mm pistol and then one of those two

Well, I have me a wonderful 870 wingmaster that I've dressed all up in the accessories I feel I need to make it a "Combat Shotgun".
ATI pistol grip full stock ATI +3 magazine extension 20 3/4" Barrel Truglo rifle sights
Nearby and secure is a shell belt full of an assortment of double and triple ought, along with a few slugs. It will hit anything I'm shooting at under 100.
Anything past 100, and I've got 3 Enfields in .303 Brit that I can choose from. I've got a No1MkIII with a nice Lyman rear and Dockendorf front sight that's slowly becoming my "go-to" rifle.
