YouOnlyWish's Get-Home-Bag Build
Serving as a blog for myself to track development and learn new things, I'm hoping this can also aid people in the future in building a BOB/GHB from scratch. I'm starting today and will add as I add.
Thanks for interest, support and commentary.
=====
August 5/10: Bought BROOKS backpack from big-box-store, came with little wallet that I intend to use and will describe later - 600D Polyester - nicely camoflauged in commuter blue and greyhound grey [/sarcasm]. Bought generic FAK - more for tools inside than actual first aid supplies. Starting to build actual FAK. Bought Germicidal Drinking Water Tablets from Coghlan's - contains Titratable Iodine - anyone with usage / storage / expiration tips are more than encouraged to contribute via post or PM.
August 7/10: Added small items to FAK - superglue, instant cold-pak, instant heat-pak Added matches, socks, lighter, batteries, plastic container with 4 packs instant oatmeal and one pack noodle chicken mix, battery powered LED stick. All above purchased from dollar store today for 12 dollars. Everything else pictured from things I have had from camping, had laying around or otherwise were already in my house. Looking for a good knife. Also looking for prepackaged clothing and am planning to ziplock the socks. All other FAK items taken from stock of First Aid supplies I already have.
August 22/10: Havn't purchased any of this - I'm waiting for the absolute best buys to come along before I get any of the things I'm currently looking for. Looking for a package of undershirts, underwear and a sweatshirt. Looking for a quality fixed blade. Looking for a water-storage and filtering device. Was thinking about getting one of those extendable batons. Also looking for a tarp, compact but packaged - less space. Planning on buying more personal hygeine items - toothbrush ect. Planning on hitting Giant Tiger this week.
August 23/10: Bought 200ft of OD 550 cord by GI PLUS and package of 80 keyrings. Bought travel messkit - Spoon, Fork, Butterknife all in canopener case. Bought 2'x4' dollarstore tarp. Bought travel containers to be filled with shampoo and soap. Bought small flashlight to be used in truck, separate from bag. Bought 'Toasterz' reusable hand warmer. Packaged a roll of TP in a ziploc bag. Removed headlamp from GHB. Bought S&W Bullseye fixed blade knife with sheath. Knife is NOT a major brand name, NOT a super expensive blade and NOT a surefire survival tool. Like many, I'm working with limited funds and this blade is better than no blade, though I do carry a Kershaw Leek with my EDC. The blade came to 40 bucks and is great for what I'm looking for... bought with what I have to play with.
Backpack is a general schoolbag. Not the cheapest, not the most expensive.
Wallet has 20 dollars canadian and soon photocopies of my ID.
Also starting to transfer important data to a USB key.
Total Spent: 178$
